GROW Design: Japanese Aero Made for GR Cars
GROW Design is one of the brands I get most excited to talk about. Mod in Japan is the exclusive distributor for GROW Design, so this one is personal for us. If you've seen our GR86 at a show, you've seen their work.
Let's talk about who they are, what makes their aero different, and the collaborations that tell you a lot about the brand.

Who is GROW Design?
GROW Design is a Japanese aero brand focused on Toyota GR cars. Their aero is known for looking intentional rather than exaggerated. They enhance the factory lines without overdoing it, and the pieces are designed to look like they could have come from the manufacturer.
The biggest takeaway: factory plus, not over the top
A lot of aero is built to be noticed from across the parking lot. GROW goes the other way. Subtle and clean from a distance, but unmistakably motorsport up close. If you want your car to look finished, not busy or forced, that's their whole philosophy.
The GR86 lineup
For the GR86, the full lineup includes:
- Front Spoiler and Garnish (also in carbon fiber)
- Side Skirts
- Rear Diffuser
- Trunk Spoiler
- Carbon Front Canards
- Front and Rear Over Fenders

GROW offers the GR86 kit in four finishes: ABS gloss black, ABS matte black (their signature color), ABS unpainted, and carbon fiber. Our car runs gloss black, which matches Toyota's factory black extremely well.
The detail that impressed me most
The hardware. GROW includes premium Japanese hardware, not self tapping screws. That might not sound exciting, but it matters a lot. Some aero kits rely on double sided tape and self tapping screws, which can be unreliable and, at speed, unsafe. GROW's kit mounts securely and properly, and that gives you peace of mind.
The GR Corolla
For the GR Corolla, GROW applied the same design language to the hatch. Front spoiler, side spoilers, rear diffuser and wing, with separate versions for cars built from September 2024 on. Our GR Corolla build guide goes through the order we'd install them.
Collaborations
This is what tells you GROW isn't making body kits in a vacuum:
- Toyota Gazoo Racing: the GR x GROW Design Aero Stabilizing Sport Seat for the GR Corolla.
- FUJITSUBO: the GROW x FUJITSUBO stainless exhaust for the GR Corolla, designed to tie in with the GROW rear end.
- HALsprings: GROW x HAL sports springs for the GR86/BRZ and for the GR Corolla, developed to work with the factory shocks. HAL also worked with Rookie Racing's Masahiro Sasaki on lowering springs for GROW. More on HAL in our HAL rebound speed post.

Our own GROW GR86
To show what GROW can do, we built our own Mod in Japan GR86 with their aero in gloss black. Front spoiler, side skirts, rear diffuser, trunk spoiler and front canards. We chose not to run the over fenders on this build. The fitment was excellent, everything lined up with the factory lines, and nothing had to be forced into place.
From a distance, the car looks subtle and clean. Up close, you notice the stepped-down front spoiler lining up perfectly with the factory bumper, and the side skirts tying the front and rear together. That's the GROW philosophy in one car. It looks like it belongs.

Why it matters that we're the exclusive distributor
Being GROW's exclusive distributor means we're the ones talking to GROW directly. When you have a fitment question, a lead time question or want a special order finish, we can get you an answer from the source instead of guessing. It also means we're accountable for getting it right, which is exactly how we like it.
The flip side is honesty about timing. Some finishes and parts come from Japan, and we'd rather tell you the real lead time up front than promise a date we can't hit.
Which GROW Design finish should you choose?
- Gloss black: the easy route, matches factory black trim, ready to install.
- Matte black: GROW's signature look if you want something a little different.
- Unpainted: for full color match, plus body shop time and cost.
- Carbon fiber: the premium visual, especially on the front spoiler and canards.
Do what's right for you and your car. There's no wrong answer here.
How we stock GROW
We stock GROW stateside in gloss black, with select parts in carbon fiber. Unpainted and matte black can be special ordered through us, with more lead time. Ask us before you plan around a date.
Honest concerns
- Lead time on special order finishes.
- Front lips and driveways don't always get along. Factor that in.
- Model year: confirm fitment on the product page, especially on the GR Corolla.
GROW Design fitment: years and models
The GROW GR86 parts we carry are listed for the 2021+ GR86, and the GR Corolla parts for the 2023 GR Corolla. That matters, because the first generation 86, FR-S and BRZ have different bodywork. A GR86 front spoiler won't fit a 2017 86. On the GR Corolla, check your edition against the product photos, because small bumper differences can affect fit.
The BRZ question comes up a lot too. The newer BRZ shares a lot with the GR86, but the front and rear bodywork is styled differently. Unless a listing names the BRZ, assume the aero is GR86 only and ask us.

Install notes and difficulty
- Front spoiler and garnish: medium. Test fit, line it up with the bumper edges, then mount.
- Side skirts: medium. Patience lining them up with the door and wheel openings pays off.
- Over fenders: medium to hard. A body shop is a good idea.
- Trunk spoiler and rear diffuser: medium. Anything involving drilling, let a shop handle.
- Canards: easy to medium, but placement matters for the look.
In every case: test fit before you commit. A good shop will tell you right away if anything needs adjusting.
Caring for ABS and carbon parts
Painted ABS is the easiest to live with. Treat it like your paint. Unpainted ABS is meant to be painted, so plan that cost. Carbon needs UV protection on the clear coat. Wash the lower pieces regularly, because road grime and stones hit them first.
Painting unpainted GROW parts
If your car isn't black, the unpainted ABS option is how you get a color matched look. Give your body shop the paint code and have them test fit the part on the car before they paint it. Painting first and discovering a fitment adjustment later means paying for paint twice. Some owners like a two tone look instead, with gloss black aero against a colored body. On a white or red GR86, that contrast is a big part of why the gloss black kit is so popular. There isn't a wrong answer here. It depends on the look you're after.
What to pair GROW aero with
Ride height first. Aero looks its best at the stance you'll actually run, so if you're planning suspension, do it before aero or at the same time. On the GR86, the GROW Design x HALsprings sports springs are designed for the factory shocks. We explain HAL's approach in our HALsprings post. For the GR Corolla, our GR Corolla build guide walks through the order.
Why we import GROW the way we do
As the exclusive distributor, we deal with GROW directly. That means when you ask us a fitment question, we can actually get you an answer instead of guessing. It also means we see the parts in person. We've run GROW on our own GR86 at shows, and the fit and finish is a big reason we keep recommending them.
