Lexus IS 500 Build Sequence: From Stock to Full NOVEL
The IS 500 might be one of the last chances to own a brand new, naturally aspirated Lexus V8. I've said that on our channel before and I still believe it. If you bought one, you probably already know you're going to modify it. The question is what order your IS 500 build should go in.
We've written about the IS 500 a few times already. There's our NOVEL IS 500 aero, manifold and catback post and our IS 500 exhaust buyer's guide. This post ties it all together into one roadmap, from stock to a full NOVEL car.

The biggest takeaway first
Reliability, then sound, then power, then chassis, then looks. You can absolutely shuffle that around. But that order keeps you from redoing work and keeps the car healthy while you build it.
Step 1: Coils
The IS 500 uses the 2UR-GSE V8, the same engine family as the IS F, RC F and GS F. Even on a newer car, coils are the cheapest foundation you can lay before you start adding power, especially if you plan on driving it hard.
This is also a good spot to upgrade instead of just replacing. HighSpark sells their Lexus V8 coils as boxed kits of four, in Standard and Premium.
Why HighSpark over stock coils? HighSpark rates the spark output at 2 to 2.5 times more powerful than an OEM coil, and they stabilize the voltage coming out of the coil, so the engine runs smoother and more stable. What you'll actually feel is throttle response. It's sharper. Now, I want to be honest here. This isn't a big horsepower part. Better combustion efficiency gets you a small gain in low-speed torque and horsepower, but it's minimal. The real win is response and a smoother-running engine.
So what's the difference between Standard and Premium? Standard is built for the street and the occasional track day. Premium is the track-focused tier, which HighSpark tunes to raise voltage starting at idle without giving up throttle response. Going by my own notes, that's about 25% better response and 7% less noise than Standard. Both are built the same way, with German copper wire and Kyocera resin. If it's a daily driver, Standard covers it. If it sees regular track days or you're adding power, that's where Premium starts to make sense.
A V8 has eight coils, so confirm on the product page how many boxes your car needs. We go deeper on timing in our post on when to replace 2UR coils.
Step 2: Exhaust
This is where most IS 500 owners start having fun. Axleback, midpipe or catback, they all change the car's personality differently. Rather than repeat it all here, our IS 500 exhaust buyer's guide goes through the options and the tradeoffs.
Step 3: Headers
The NOVEL Racing Japan GEN III Exhaust Manifold is listed for the IS F, RC F, GS F and IS 500. The product page talks about an equal-length runner layout and a refined, high-pitched exhaust character, and in my humble opinion this is the part that changes how the 2UR feels and sounds the most.

Before headers go on, know your local emissions rules, budget for a shop that's done 2UR headers, and be ready for the sound to change. More details in our GEN 3 manifold post.
Step 4: Suspension
The NOVEL Racing Japan x Endless Zeal Racing Coilovers for IS 500 are listed at F 14KG / R 20KG. The product page describes them as built for dedicated track use, developed through NOVEL's Nürburgring work. That's a firm, race-oriented setup.

My honest take: if your IS 500 is mostly a street car, talk to us before you order these. If it sees track days, this is where they make the most sense. Either way, suspension goes before aero, because ride height decides how the front lip and diffuser sit.
Step 5: Carbon aero
NOVEL's IS 500 aero is handmade in Japan, and the product pages say the design is inspired by their motorsports work at the Nürburgring. The pieces we carry:
- Carbon Fiber Front Lip Spoiler Diffuser
- Carbon Fiber Side Skirts / Side Diffusers
- Carbon Fiber Rear Under Spoiler
- Carbon Fiber Rear Diffuser
- Carbon Fiber Trunk Spoiler (listed as no-drill, for the 2022+ IS 500 and IS 350)

You don't have to buy it all at once. A lot of customers start with the front lip and trunk spoiler, then add the sides and rear later. Hardware kits for the lip and rear under spoiler are listed separately, so ask us to make sure your order is complete.
Tradeoffs worth being honest about
- Looks first is totally fine. Just know you may re-check the aero after coilovers.
- Power first is the most fun. If your coils are tired, you're stacking risk.
- All at once means fewer shop visits, but a bigger bill, and it's harder to tell which change you like.
What we see from IS 500 owners
Most IS 500 owners we talk to want the car to look and sound like it should have from the factory. Not a wild build. Something that feels finished. That's honestly why NOVEL works so well on this car. Their aero follows the factory lines, and the headers give the 2UR the voice a lot of people feel it was missing.

IS 500 build fitment gotchas
The IS 500 shares the 2UR V8 family with the IS F, RC F and GS F, which is why the NOVEL GEN III exhaust manifold is listed for all of them. Body parts are a different story. The IS 500 F Sport Performance has its own bumpers and trunk, so the NOVEL carbon aero for it is IS 500 specific. Don't assume an IS 350 F Sport part fits, even though the cars look close.
Also check the coilover listing. The NOVEL x Endless Zeal coilovers for the IS 500 list F 14KG and R 20KG spring rates. That's softer than the RC F version, which makes sense for a sedan that a lot of people drive every day, but it's still a racing coilover.

Install difficulty for each step
- Coils: easy. Cool engine, battery disconnected, gentle with connectors.
- Exhaust: easy to medium, depending on which section you replace.
- Headers: hard. Shop work with someone who has done 2UR headers.
- Coilovers: medium, plus an alignment after.
- Carbon aero: medium. Test fit everything before drilling.
Budget and timing
Most IS 500 owners we talk to don't do this all at once, and we don't think you need to. Coils and exhaust are a good first round. Headers are the big spend. Suspension and aero can come after you've lived with the car for a while. Spreading it out also lets you notice what each change actually does.
Maintenance on a modified IS 500
- Recheck exhaust and header hardware after the first heat cycles.
- Recheck ride height after coilovers settle.
- Protect carbon from UV, and wash the lower aero regularly.
- Follow your plug interval so the coils stay happy.
What to pair with what
Headers pair naturally with an exhaust you already like, so it makes sense to pick your exhaust with the headers in mind. Our IS 500 exhaust buyer's guide covers sound levels and price tiers. Coilovers pair with aero, because ride height decides how the lip and diffusers sit.
If you're curious what the same plan looks like on the coupe, our RC F build guide follows the same logic.

Next step
If you're putting a plan together, the easiest thing is to add the parts you're looking at to your cart and hit Add to Quote. We'll look it over, confirm fitment and availability, and get back to you. If you'd rather talk it through first, reach out and Tania or Kenia can help with fitment and stock questions. No pressure at all. We'd rather you buy the right part once than the wrong part twice.
